〈 CHARACTER INFO 〉
CHARACTER NAME: Sadie Doyle
CHARACTER AGE: Unknown, but based on context she is likely in her early-to-mid thirties
SERIES: Beyond Belief (A segment of the Thrilling Adventure Hour podcast/comics)
CHRONOLOGY: Post-"It's a Bad Bad Bad Bad Bad Bad Bad World" (TAH #219)
CLASS: Hero
BACKGROUND: The TAH wiki
As for as events go, Sadie doesn't have a lengthy history worth including, as Beyond Belief is 99% one-shot comedy stories, hence the short wiki entry. The only real way of noting that time has passed is the advancing age of Sadie's best friend's daughter, who appears occasionally. Otherwise, the narrative continuously reverts to the status quo, which consists of Sadie and her husband Frank enjoying life, liquor, and their love, not necessarily in that order.
But to frame things a little more chronologically, Sadie was born to a wealthy family and grew up in privilege, splitting her time between Connecticut and London. From a very young age, she was able to see and interact with ghosts, though she did not recognize them as such, and in fact was regularly visited by her grandparents for quite some time after their deaths. A natural medium, she can likewise recognize and communicate with essentially any supernatural being.
Sadie attended private boarding schools and later university, and after a somewhat impetuous youth during which she "dated dangerously," she met and immediately fell in love with Frank Doyle, an ex-exorcist (an exorcist squared, perhaps) turned medium. The two have been happily married ever since, and are extremely devoted to one another; you might think of them as a modern-day Morticia and Gomez Addams, but replace the macabre with martinis. As they appear to be independently wealthy, Sadie does not have a job other than being a socialite, though she often finds herself compelled to offer assistance to those in supernatural distress, and the Doyles are frequently approached by those who know of their reputations. Each episode of canon consists of some supernatural problem intruding on their daily life (for instance: after a body is found at a horse racing track and discovered to have been killed with supernaturally sharp claws, Sadie and Frank are brought into investigate and discover that the jockey was killed by a horse, who is also a werewolf.) After solving the problem, the Doyles go back to enjoying a good drink.
PERSONALITY: Sadie and her husband may have a fearsome reputation among supernatural nogoodniks, but anyone else who meets her will note her warm, sunny, occasionally overexcitable personality. She doesn't go out of her way to locate problems that her unique abilities can solve, but she can't bring herself to walk away from one, either, and is sometimes the one to insist to Frank that they help. She's very good at being stubborn. Her circle of true, trusted friends is smaller than her wider social scene of friendly acquaintances, but she enjoys the company of others and never looks down on anyone based on class. That said, she can be absolutely unforgiving when it comes to those who would harm her loved ones or just do really, really, really bad things to people.
While she shows her big heart by helping people, that heart fully belongs to her husband Frank Doyle. She could get by without him, but they are deeply, utterly devoted to one another and if they found themselves stranded on a desert island together, far from society...well, as long as the island had a liquor cabinet, they could happily live the rest of their lives that way.
On a related note, it's got to be said: Sadie is a drunk, along with her husband. Although she rarely exhibits severe effects (such as passing out, bring hung over, telling really long and incoherent stories) of chronic drunkenness, sobriety is her #2 fear. (Bees are #1.) She's a very merry drunk, but even put in the best light, this can be annoying to deal with one-on-one and makes it a little harder to get her full attention.
Although Sadie is definitely not stupid, she can come off as a little shallow and/or out of touch. She's seen and done a lot of things, but she has plenty of money and spends most of her time drinking and having adventures with her husband; it's not exactly relatable, and while she wouldn't mean to insult anyone, she lacks perspective at times.
At the end of the day, Sadie is a kind person who makes a bad enemy and a good friend. Just don't suggest she get on the wagon. And really don't try to tell her that bees are more scared of her than she is of them.
POWER:
Alcohol Mastery.
-Through this ability, Sadie will be immune to the worst effects of alcohol. When drunk, she'll still be impaired, but she will not suffer from hangovers, alcohol poisoning, liver disease etc. (The way she drinks, this is dubiously canon.)
-Sadie will also be able to control the blood-alcohol content in others. By concentrating hard, she can make someone drunk, and whoops, the bank robber who was running away is stumbling right to the ground. It will require greater effort and concentration to induce greater levels of drunkenness, but unless she actively chooses to lower someone's BAC, the drunkenness must be recovered from naturally. She can also lower the BAC of someone who got drunk on their own. She cannot use this power on herself.
-If she thinks about it, Sadie will just know where any particular liquor can be found within a five-mile radius. Makes shopping much easier.
Spook Sense
-Sadie will retain her knowledge of the supernatural in her home universe and natural medium abilities, but as there are no non-import ghosts in the game, I would like to expand this to a form of psychometry. Upon making physical contact with a supernatural or magical being, she will have a basic awareness of what kind of supernatural being they are and how they work. (Nothing personally identifiable, more along the lines of "is a ghoul, eats flesh to survive.")
-Without any conscious knowledge of it, she will find herself drawn to supernatural beings or supernatural acts. Lucifer is doing something dastardly in downtown De Chima this weekend? She might just happen to go shopping there that day.
